An Overview of Urine Drug Testing

The urine drug test is the most common and oldest drug testing method.  It is also the quickest and least expensive way to screen for possible drug use.  Other advantages include the safe and minimally invasive tests, and the fact that results can often be received within 24-48 hours.

Convenience also plays a large part in the choice of urine tests; every city usually contains dozens of testing labs.  Because these centers are often located close to a particular company, the visits are shorter.  All the prospective employee has to do is sign some releases before urinating into a cup.  Employees may be able to shut the restroom door partway for added privacy.  Because many urine tests are able to detect masking agents, participants can urinate in privacy.  The process requires approximately 20 minutes, and employers can receive results within hours.

Urine drug tests are most commonly used as pre-employment drug screenings.  However, many scientists have created tools to foil the tests. You can obtain a wide range of such products in specialty shops or online.  In some cases, individuals may even purchase urine from a “clean” person and use that during their drug test.  They store the urine in a thin plastic bag that is strapped to their leg to use later on during the test.

Synthetic urine was created once drug testing labs started testing for masking agents.  The urine is available in liquid or powder form which is mixed with water and comes with a container and thermometer.  The temperature will remain fresh for several hours, and the synthetic urine contains every property the lab tests.  Because certain chemicals and body temperatures normally present in human urine are present, synthetic urine can be very convincing.

Urine drug tests are minimally invasive, relatively cheap and easily accessible, but employers realize they are also the easiest to beat.  Because of the various cheating methods easily available, many employers prefer to use hair follicle, saliva or sweat testing to detect the possibility of drugs.  These methods are more expensive and more inconvenient, but also more reliable.
